Posted by Janet Smith at 14-Jan-2009 13:30. The World Health Organization estimates that there are between 100 and 120 million people with diabetes worldwide. If you have any remote thought that you may have diabetes, be tested or see your physician immediately. In the United States 20 million people have diabetes:
Eight million Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes, and a new case is diagnosed every minute.
Another eight million have the disease but are undiagnosed.
Diabetes significantly increases an individual’s chance of premature death and often changes his lifestyle dramatically -- yet half of all Americans with diabetes do not know they have the disease.
Early detection and treatment reduces the likelihood of complications, so if you are exhibiting the diabetic symptoms discussed on this page, talk to your doctor immediately. Type 1 diabetes signs include:
• frequent urination
• unusual thirst
• extreme hunger
• unusual weight loss
• irritability
What Causes Diabetic Symptoms?
Diabetic signs appear because of the body's inability to use the sugar in the bloodstream to fuel cells. Without insulin, sugar remains in the blood where the kidneys eventually try to filter it out and recycle it for later use. When sugar levels become excessive, the kidneys are unable to filter it all and it spills into the urine, taking water with it. If left untreated, the body begins to burn stored fat for energy, resulting in weight loss and hunger and some potentially fatal metabolic disturbances.
